You can hire a car or take your own vehicle with a tent set up to go on the road and sleep under the stars. Here's how to take the ultimate holiday. The concept of ‘holidays’ has taken a turn for the worse as COVID-19 has reinvented work rules, but holidays are different now too. As an alternative to the plane journeys that still put us off, taking the car and travelling around Portugal has become the most common option. The problem? Crowded hotels (which often rhyme with high prices) and a not dissimilar scenario at campsites.

So there's nothing like combining these two concepts - comfortable hotel accommodation and contact with nature at a campsite - and literally taking them to the car. Tents on the roof of vehicles have become fashionable this summer and there's no shortage of options for hire. MAGG has gone in search of all these offers so that you can enjoy what's left of the summer. Ready for adventure? In June, Hertz rent-a-car, together with Topo Tents, launched Hertz Campers, a service for renting Jeep vehicles with tents installed on the roof. As the name suggests, it consists of a camping trip, with the special feature that before falling asleep in the roof tent, you can drive down the road in a sturdy Jeep.
